Abstract : A recommendation is made to implement a program of after-treatment care for drug abusers. The program envisions the establishment of a nationwide organization, with therapeutic groups operating in every community, patterned after the modus operandi of Alcoholics Anonymous. A coordinated effort, with operational relations with all existing drug treatment programs, which would serve drug abusers after detoxification, it would also act as a referral agency to established treatment centers. Such a program, though primarily directed to veterans, would equally serve the needs of active duty personnel. An organizational structure is suggested, as well as resource personnel, available to initiate further study required for implementation. An account of the role of the Army in combatting the problem of drug abuse, with specific reference to the program initiated at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, is used as background to demonstrate the role the Army has played in helping to resolve a national concern.
