Abstract : The methods chosen for the study entailed a survey using questionnaires for those nurses presently employed and a review of personnel records of those who had terminated employment. The research indicated that of the 189 nurses who responded to the questionnaire, eighty-five stated salary was the most important reason for remaining in their present employment. High standards of patient care and work satisfaction were second and third respectively. In ranking selected factors considered important in retaining nurses in general, there was a correlation between age, length of employment and factors selected. The factors ranked highest by the overall group were standards of nursing care, interesting work, and salary in that order. (Modified author abstract)
