Abstract : How does a researcher convert his own findings into recommendations for action. The site for this analysis was a business organization with an in-house social research staff. The primary documents for the analysis were 150 studies in the company's files. In Part I of the report, the organization itself is briefly described as well as its staffing for research. The content of the research program is classified according to its target, its time orientation, and the locus of the researcher. Several functions of research for this business corporation are identified. The reader is introduced to the intellectual question of how recommendations for company procedures or policies are produced. Part II traces the recommending process by examining 10 studies in detail and drawing generalizations from them. (Author)
