Abstract : Quasiparticle tunneling into superconducting transition metals often show current-voltage characteristics differing from the ideal curves: there being an excess current peak or 'knee' occuring at biases near the sum of the half energy gaps of the two superconducting electrodes. In the present work evidence is given that this knee is probably caused by excess adsorbed oxygen in the oxide insulating barrier. Using bulk niobium single crystals, a knee is observed in the I-V characteristic, although of much smaller size than previously reported.
