Abstract : The bifunctional alkylating agent, di-2-chloroethyl sulfide (HS), induced acetylcholinesterase (AChE) synthesis and axon formation in mouse neuroblastoma cells in vitro. The monofunctional analog, 2-chloroethylethyl sulfide (CEES), produced similar effects, but much higher concentrations were required. The induction by HS occurred even when the induction of axon formation was blocked by vinblastine. The enzyme induction by HS was inversely related to the ability of the monolayer cells to divide, as measured by observing the appearance of microcolonies or the disappearance of single cells.
