Abstract : The study was designed to compare the effectiveness of several nonionic surfactants in enhancing defoliation of the bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Red Kidney) when mixed with 7-oxabicylo (2.2.1) heptane, 2,3-dicarboxylic acid (endothall) and (2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid (ethephon). Also, the defoliation dose-response of the bean and the white ash (Fraxinus americana L.) was determined for polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (Tween 20) when mixed with endothall/ethephon. All surfactants enhanced the defoliation of the bean equally well at the 1.0% level. Bean plants showed increased defoliation with an increase in Tween 20 from 0.0625% to 1.0%. The white ash showed a nonlinear dose-response. The most effective level of Tween 20 was between 0.5% and 1.0% for both the bean and the white ash. (Author)
