Abstract : The report deals with the use of a finite element code for predicting the response of expediently surfaced soils to applied loading. A laboratory testing procedure is described which was used to characterize the response of a particular soil, in this case a beach sand, and a fiberglass reinforced polyester surfacing material. Field loading tests were conducted using an 8-inch diameter steel plate and the deflections were compared to those obtained using the analytical computer program. The finite element program proved to be capable of predicting the behavior of this type of stablized soil system. (Author)
