Abstract : The long-term objective of North Korea is unification under Communist rule, while the primary objective of the Republic of Korea is unification based on principles of freedom and democracy. The General Assembly of the United Nations resolved to bring about, by peaceful means, the establishment of a unified, independent and democratic Korea under a representative form of government, and the full restoration of international peace and security in the area. Data were gathered to establish the present trend of these divergent objectives. The intense feelings of the Korean people against Communism, along with the magnetism of nationalism is discovered to be a driving force to bring this question into focus. It would be in the best interests of the United States to promote democratic survival in the Far East to contain the spread of Communism. (Modified author abstract)
