Abstract : It was found that both the hyperfine field and the electric field gradient in FeCr2S4 show abrupt changes at 10K. It is reasonable to explain the Mossbauer Effect data below this temperature in terms of a static distortion of the tetrahedral sites with c/a < 1 and to attribute this distortion to a Jahn Teller (J-T) stabilization of the 5Eg (Fe(2+)) ground state. Above 10K it is possible to explain the observation in terms of a dynamic J-T stabilization. If the static distortion can be independently confirmed then the compound may provide a useful vehicle for the study of the transition from dynamic to static J-T stabilization.
