Abstract : Polar cap optical phenomena is summarized to show that these form a distinct category. Various aspects of the problem such as logistic difficulties, a working definition of the polar cap, the present status of the knowledge of polar optical phenomena, the type of information obtained from the study, and the instrumentation presently available, are discussed. These factors are evaluated to derive a best possible, workable optical program for the polar cap studies. (Author)
