Abstract : Barrel steel billets (Cr-Mo-V steel) were inspected by an ultrasonic computerized inspection system to obtain data for a tentative ultrasonic cleanliness standard for 20MM barrel blank steel. A correlation was found between the percentage of steel heat product rejected for cracks and the average heat cleanliness (determined as average from 6 billets representing the heat). A correlation coefficient of .95 was calculated for this linear relation and it was used as the basis for setting a tentative ultrasonic standard. Of seven heats examined, the percentage cracked did not appear to be related to variation of hardenability within the chemical composition required in the specification. The magnetic particle cleanliness method of inspection showed random correlation with percentage of heat product rejected for cracks. (Author)
