Abstract : The results of a program to determine the uniaxial and biaxial thermal stress behavior of ATJ-S graphite are described. Hollow cylindrical thermal stress specimens were heated rapidly at their inner surfaces to produce large transient temperature gradients. The temperatures were measured at several locations in each specimen and these data were employed to calculate the thermal stress and deformation histories. Strains were measured at the outer surface of each specimen; these strain values were compared with the calculated stress and strain values. On the basis of these comparisons, a number of relationships pertaining to the stress-strain behavior of ATJ-S in the thermal stress environment were established. Similarly, comparisons between the calculated and measured conditions at the time of fracture were used to define thermal stress fracture criteria. Taken together, the results obtained in these experiments describe a design approach, applicable to graphite materials in a transient thermal stress environment, which utilizes presently available uniaxial and biaxial property data.
