Abstract : Differences have been observed in the patterns of fractionation of the two protein components (PI and PII) isolated from the membrane of red cells at 0 and 42 days of storage. These data indicate that PI and PII represent two different protein mixtures and that, during storage of blood, alterations occur in the structure of these proteins, since they are extrinsic in the red cell membrane and subjected to environmental changes. These results are also confirmed by the amino acid analysis of the isolated fractions and by their molecular weight determination. Several steroid hormones show a strong affinity for the membrane and for the residue remaining after extraction of the two protein components, both at 0 and 42 days. The strongest interaction is observed with estrone and estradiol. (Author)
