Abstract : Yeast cells exposed to appropriate concentrations of iodoacetic acid, or N-ethylmaleimide, for 30 or 40 min became non-viable and inactive metabolically, but transported sugars by facilitated diffusion across a still functional external membrane. Iodoacetic acid also affected cell membranes, eliminating an intracell compartment and apparently inactivating some sugar carriers in the external membrane so that the rate of transport was reduced. K(m) values determined for several sugars with this yeast preparation agree with values obtained with fresh cells and with those reported in the literature. (Author)
