Abstract : An account is given of laboratory experiments and theory on hydrodynamics of density and turbidity surge flows. The early hydrodynamic stages of such flows are simulated in the experiments and are dominated by drag forces on the characteristic 'heads' formed at their front. Experiments with flows in predeposited sediment bottoms indicated marked sensitivity of acceleration to bottom scouring, and that significant accelerations could have occurred in turbidity flows in the ocean; such as initiated by the Grank Banks earthquake. The final decay stages of turbidity flows are discussed theoretically; this stage is probably dominated by bottom friction. (Author)
