Abstract : L STUDIES OF INTENSE RELATIVISTIC ELECTRON BEAMS WITH DIELECTRIC CATHODES ARE PRESENTED. It is found that beams can propagate on dielectric rods with realistic charges and currents induced in a surface plasma. Space charge fields present during the initial beam propagation down the rod accelerate large numbers of light ions to energies comparable to the beam energy. These ions provide partial neutralization in the diode gap, allowing the beam flux at the anode to be high enough to form a dense plasma. The beam pinches in the anode plasma. The model presents opportunities for further development of dielectric cathodes. Experiments are recommended to clarify the phenomena occurring with dielectric cathodes. (Author)
