Abstract : The luminosity of the reacting gas in the flow field of a chemical HF laser from a wedge-shaped three-component nozzle has been observed photographically. The effects of variations of ambient test-section pressure, secondary nozzle flows, and variations of H2 fuel mass flow rates were observed. In these photographs, the edge of the luminous layer is assumed to be a measure of the diffusion of H2 into the primary nozzle oxidizer flow. The presence of shock structure in the flow field is noted, and an attempt to account for this effect is included. Observations of both a linear and parabolic growth of the luminous layer were noted. The presence of a parabolic growth appeared to require both ambient pressure less than or equal to nozzle exit pressures and the absence of a significant base region. (Author)
