Abstract : Previous publications and reports are supplemented by two contributions to the study of sensitization and energy transfer between rare earth ions in this final report. The first is a general and tutorial review of Cooperative Effects in Crystals.' It stresses energy transfer and radiationless transitions. The second is an invited paper presented at the First European Electro optics Markets and Technology Conference, Geneva, Switzerland. It is 'A Review of Near IR Optically Pumped Solid State Lasers', high lighting the role the radiationless transitions and lattice properties play in creating such lasers. (Author)
