Abstract : The JOSS Program will compute the geodetic distance and the azimuths between two geodetic positions referred to an ellipsoid of revolution. Provision is made for using parameters of the ellipsoid other than those set in the program. This solution of the geodetic inverse problem is based on Helmert's Long-Line Position Computation and should be good to ten significant figures, which is one more than the full capacity of JOSS. Comparison of the values given by the JOSS program with those obtained using the exact Helmert solution on a 1620 computer indicate agreement in distance in most cases within 0.1 meter and in azimuth 0.01 arc-second.
