Abstract : The problem of crack analysis and stress singularities at the tip of a crack, has, up to now, been approached either in an analytical fashion, using complex variables and conformed mapping, or with the finite-element method, using elements which may or may not account for the singular stresses around the tip of the crack. The following study defines a so-called 'special element' to be used at the crack tip in conjunction with the general finite-element method. It was proved to be more efficient than previous methods for it accounts more fully for stress singularities. The element-stiffness matrix was derived using conformal mapping of the special element into a more readily usable one. (Author)
