Abstract : The Mossbauer effect has been used to investigate the production and defect stabilization of Co, Fe, Eu and Dy in a variety of crystals. The experiments include studies of the site and valence-state distribution of Co and Fe in spinels, of very short-lived tetravalent states of Eu and Dy produced by alpha-particle bombardment, of divalent Eu in calcium difluoride and its conversion to trivalent Eu, and of Fe surface defects in hematite.
