Abstract : Following an examination of selected point process problems, stressing biometry and reliability and their interface, the main questions dealt with by point process theory are systematically presented. Then undertaken is a panoramic sketch of the theory--its probabilistic, statistical and model-building aspects. On the basis of the practical and theoretical orientation thus provided, some directions for further research in point process theory are suggested. (Author)
