Abstract : Significant occurrences of two anomalous local wind phenomena in the Mediterranean region have been examined to determine the relationship between the events and the satellite-observed cloud patterns. The local winds studied are the mistral of the Gulf of Lions and the bora of the northeast Adriatic Sea. Fifteen winter months from the period April 1969-April 1971 were selected for analysis. Criteria were established for determining the most significant cases for further study. For the major mistral events vertical time sections of major meteorological parameters were constructed to assist in understanding the development of the mistral and its relationship to the observed clouds. It was concluded that the appearance of the cloud field can usually allow the more severe mistral cases to be differentiated from the less severe. In the case of the bora, cloud imagery can be of little use for the cyclonic cases and of greater, but limited, use for other cases. (Author)
