Abstract : Theoretical studies of the morphology of the channels of streams and tidal estuaries are verified by measurements of water flow rates, channel width and depth, sediment size and transport (bed-load and in suspension), and the mobility and stability of stream banks and bed in the principal streams of China and some in the USSR. Equations are derived relating these parameters to each other and to the cross-sectional and longitudinal profiles of channels. Channels of streams and tidal estuaries are compared. The effects of cyclical fluctuations in flood and tidal flows are discussed. An equation for the index of channel mobility is derived which describes the shape of both rivers and tidal estuaries.
