Abstract : Two and three-dimensional isoparametric nonconforming finite elements are developed and adapted to the shell intersection problem. Two-dimensional elements model the shells away from the intersection region while three-dimensional elements are used right at the intersection. A transition element connects these two dissimilar elements. In addition to plane, plate, and shell standard test problems, the procedure is also applied to normally intersecting cylinders of near-equal diameters. Comparison is made between computed results and those obtained from careful experiments. The excellent agreement between the results of the two procedures is demonstrated. (Author)
