Abstract : The program was conducted to study the penetration characteristics of the Terminal Delivery Vehicle into frozen soil. The study and tests were conducted for impact velocities of 200, 400 and 600 feet per second. In the analytical study, impact angles of 0, 15 and 45 degrees to the vertical and angles of attack of plus or minus 5 and plus or minus 10 degrees were included. The contractor's Two-Dimensional Impact and Penetration Computer Program was used to predict penetration depths and time history of applied loads to the TDV during the impact and penetration event. Accurate correlation was achieved between the tests and the computer simulations. Predictive analysis was conducted on 90 different impact situations into frozen sand to determine those impacts that result in successful TDV implantation. (Author)
