Abstract : The study concerns four groups of metastable phases differentiated by their crystalline structure and concentration of beta-stabilizing elements in titanium alloys with transition metals. The transition mechanism of certain of the metastable phases cannot be fully explained at the atomic level solely on the basis of the pecularities of atom packing in the crystal lattice. In a first approximation, pictures of localized (responsible for the covalent bond) and nonlocalized (responsible for the metallic bond) electrons are useful; the change in the ratio between these electrons determines the extent of phase metastability and other properties of alloys based on transition metals.
