Abstract : An incentive plan for maintenance workers under which management will pay the men on the basis of both the time and the quality of their work is developed. Standard data are employed as the method of measuring time, and the concept of different types of defects yields a method of measuring quality. A review of the history of maintenance incentive plans leads to the idea of consumer indifference as the basis of the proposed plan. The indifference incentive plan for maintenance workers is then developed, and an example of such a plan is presented and discussed. Problems associated with the implementation of the new incentive plan in industry are discussed, and possible topics of future research are mentioned. (Modified author abstract)
