Abstract : The concept of transmissive similarity is introduced and explained. Some basic laws governing similarity in a light absorbing, randomly shallow angle scattering, macroscopically homogeneous medium are derived in terms of the absorption coefficient and the dispersion (not scattering) coefficient. Absorptive and dispersive similarity are subsumed under transmissive similarity. Applying the similarity laws developed, the procedure is presented for determining the optical properties of the medium required to obtain the desired scale model. Three examples illustrate the method. The transmissive partial differential equation is given in dimensional and dimensionless form. (Author)
