Abstract : The report describes the research and development of a high temperature electro-static transducer. A parallel plate breadboard unit was designed, built, and tested to evaluate the feasibility of the concept and the accompanying demodulation electronics. A study was then conducted to determine the configuration and materials for a high temperature unit. This resulted in the design and manufacture of a two-inch displacement transducer with cylindrical quartz elements supporting metalized patches. Moving contacts in the device were eliminated by conducting the electrical signal from the inner moving element by means of an inconnel spring. Test results obtained with the unit indicated that the transducer provides an accurate means of displacement measurements up to 600F. It is concluded that with minor modifications and continued testing, accurate displacement measurements could be obtained with this device at temperatures up to 1000F. (Author)
