Abstract : Comparative investigations on oral and parenteral immunization with bovine serum albumin (BSA) were carried out in rabbits. The main interest was directed to the secondary immune response following primary oral BSA application and subsequent oral, intraperitoneal, intramuscular, intravenous or subcutanous boosters by the same antigen. Immune response and booster effect were tested quantitatively and qualitatively including the immunoglobulin classes. It could be shown that following oral immunization and subsequent oral and parenteral boosters a typical secundary immune response or hyperimmune response occurred. No essential differences were observed after secundary application of the antigen by different parenteral routes: in any case precipitating and complement fixing antibodies were noted. A typical secundary immune response does not occur after intravenous immunization and secundary oral BSA application. (Modified author abstract)
