Abstract : Under consideration of current references on freeze-drying apparatus used in microbiology and own experiences with some models the main parts of apparatus, the best way for their being assembled and the principles of function are discussed. Of two basic types of equipment a variety seem not very suitable for lyophilization of large quantities of vaccine, where narrow limits of potency are demanded. Consequently a chamber unit is proposed which covers a wide range of working conditions. A powerful vacuum system rotating and Roots-pump secures rapid evacuation of permanent gases up to 0.01 micron and water vapor is fixed on cold traps filled with liquid nitrogen. Working temperatures during the first step of drying reach--60C. This arrangement allows semi-automatic drying to any desired value of residual moisture of lots up to 2500 ampoules of vaccine batches up to 900 ml within about 24 hours.
