Abstract : Most large computer systems can be regarded as being constructed from a numer of independent sub-units, each of which has a characteristic mean time between failures and mean time to repair. The report gives a method of calculating the probability that such a system is in a fully operational state, or in any one of the possible failure states, at any given instant. If it is possible to ascribe effectiveness to the system in its various failure states as well as to the fully operational state, this information can be combined with the results of the probability calculations to give a system effectiveness plot. Such plots can be used to compare the availability expected from different system designs. (Author)
