Abstract : A study was made of the kinetics of solid state decomposition below the melting point to determine the suitability of modeling the reaction with the Weibull cumulative distribution function. Reaction histories for the isothermal decomposition of malonic acid and cupferron tosylate were obtained from literature sources, and differential scanning calorimetry was used to produce thermograms of the isothermal decomposition of benzoyl peroxide. Percent of reaction was plotted as a function of time on Weibull graph paper, and the resulting linearity implied a mixed Weibull distribution model. A graphical algorithm was developed to separate the combined solid and liquid phase data, which were re-plotted on the Weibull paper as independent data sets. The solid phase plot produced Weibull parameters identical with the equation of the Avrami-Erofeev solid state model. (Modified author abstract)
