Abstract : The purposes of the study are to examine the nature of the first supervisory assignment of Air Force personnel and the transition from worker to supervisor. Areas examined include the training and preparation received or recommended for the initial supervisory assignment; the supervisory skills, techniques, and practices applied; the amount of time allocated to supervision; and the problems, difficulties, and frustrations encountered. It was concluded that there is no overriding need for a new or improved set of guidelines for Air Force supervisors. The majority of Air Force supervisors devote less than fifty percent of total time to supervision. (Modified author abstract)
