Abstract : This investigation constitutes an indepth study of the intrinsic polarization of late type giant and supergiant stars, which will better define the relationships that exist between polarization percentages and other known physical parameters. During the investigation a suitable method of polarimetry was developed and this method was put to use for the detection of stellar polarization. Polarization data was also collected from other reference sources for stars within the spectral region M1 to M6, and this data was examined for suspected relationships with temperature and infrared radiation. The data was also studied with respect to several parameters for which a correlation is not expected, specifically: apparent magnitude, distance, and magnetic field strength.
