Abstract : Three computer programs were written to find the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of acoustic normal modes in the ocean. The programs used two different methods: an iterative finite difference scheme, and a method based upon the WKB(Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin) approximation of quantum mechanics. The methods assume a flat fluid bottom and are designed for any arbitrary sound speed profile. While the results of both the finite difference and the WKB methods agreed, the WKB method proved faster. (Author)
