Abstract : A class of deterministic control problems involving single variable but largely unknown plants is considered. A systematic design technique is described for which the controller ensures a fast convergence of the system error to an arbitrarily specified ultimate bound with a guaranteed system stability. The controller has a fixed feedback structure which is completely specified by the desired system characteristics and is independent of the unknown parameters of the plant. Modeling accuracy or plant identification thus becomes a less stringent requirement and the capability of feedback control is extended so that an arbitrary plant uncertainty can be handled within the framework of feedback theory.
