Abstract : A study of the electrical hazards associated with the operation of a hospital intensive care unit was made. The study includes hazards from macroshock, microshock, and high-frequency interference to electromedical equipment from sources interior and exterior to the hospital. A discussion is presented of the controversial subject of isolated power systems and why the author believes they can not be justified for use in the intensive care unit. Taking a systems approach, an electrical system safety plan is developed for the intensive care unit. The plan includes construction, purchasing of electromedical equipment, training of personnel, testing the system for electrical safety, operation, and maintenance of electromedical equipment in the system.
