Abstract : Since recent advancements in production line technology have surpassed present inspection and control techniques, a need has developed for a highly reliable inspection systems capable of performing 1000 inspections per minute or greater. This research report presents such a system. The system operates by emitting a laser beam across the path of items on a production line. As the items pass through the beam a shadow is cast on a photo-transistor array. This array, in conjunction with digital circuitry, detects and analyzes the shadow resulting in a pulsed output which signifies if the measured attribute of the product is within the specified tolerances.
