Abstract : The planning of production in both the public and private sectors frequently raises the question of what can be obtained from a given expenditure for the factors of production. The answer to such a question is given in economic-technical terms by an indirect production function, which in the case of the public sector is the foundation for a cost-benefit analysis. Using a general abstract model of production, a variety of indirect production functions are examined in this monograph, along with the related cost and return functions. The special forms arising for homotheticity of the parent direct production functions are examined in detail, leading to a suggestion for statistical analysis of returns to scale by observation of multiproduct production without assuming maximal profits.
