Abstract : A series of potential 'non-toxic' antifouling agents was examined for effects on barnacle growth. Each compound is known to be an effective inhibitor for calcium carbonate precipitation. Tests were conducted using freshly settled barnacles of species B. eburneus and B. amphitrite. Three compounds, glycine, nitrilotriacetic acid and mercaptoacetic acid, showed significant growth retardation properties. Inhibition was effective at inhibitor levels of 10 to the minus fourth power and 10 to the minus fifth power M. No measurable difference in survival was noted between control and test organisms.
