Abstract : Research programs involved alloy preparation, studies of environmental effects, elevated and room temperature fatigue behavior, creep-fatigue interaction studies, fatigue crack growth in stiffened and unstiffened panels, determination of threshold levels for fatigue crack growth, and an assessment of the role of fracture toughness and mean stress in fatigue crack growth. The fatigue behavior of composite materials as well as of a number of structural materials such as Ti-6Al-4V was investigated. Advances in the use of thermal conductivity to study dislocation arrays have been made, and the use of surface waves to detect and monitor fatigue cracks has been developed.
