Abstract : It has been noticed by many assembly language programmers that some instructions are used much more frequently than others. If the most frequently used instructions can be coded and executed more efficiently, a substantial saving in memory space and execution time can be achieved. This paper discusses an approach which uses the information about the instruction-set utilization to design an efficient instruction-set. The results of some measurements of PDP-10 instruction-set utilization are presented, and an instruction-set design, using these results is given. The proposed approach is particularly useful in the design of a mini-computer where the use of the bits of an instruction is often quite critical. (Author)
