Abstract : An oral mask invented by Dr. O.F. Pinto, was evaluated to determine its suitability for use, in lieu of mouthpiece breathing valves, with authorized self-contained underwater breathing apparatus. The dead space volume of the mask is approximately 200 cubic centimeters. It was concluded that diver-to-diver communications can be significantly implemented with this device. Selected working exposures, with the NAVXDIVINGU pneumatic ergometer, at simulated depths in a recompression chamber, were performed with compressed air and mixed gas breathing media to study physiological suitability of the mask in general and, specifically, any consequences arising from its dead space ventilation requirements.
