Abstract : Hydrocarbon air pollution in Baku, the Soviet Union's largest oil refining center, is very serious, reaching levels up to 15 times the permissible amount. Sources of pollution include unused gas, open storage tanks and ditches of oil wastes, and industrial spills. Prevailing winds are unfavorable, as are the normally high temperatures in the area, which facilitate evaporation. Lack of proper urban planning is also partly to blame. (Author)
