Abstract : Synthetic programs are programs that attempt to simulate the behavior of existing application programs by using precise amounts of the computing resource. A careful selection of a mix of synthetic programs can simulate in a realistic manner an entire multiprogramming system. The degree of multiprogramming and relative system throughout can be measured directly. Synthetic programs can provide an effective aid for large-scale multiprogramming systems evaluation. (Author)
