Abstract : The influence of microstructural parameters, such as austenitic grain size, martensite plate size, and martensite morphology, on microcracking in the plate martensite of high carbon steel and Fe-C alloys, has been evaluated by quantitative metallographic techniques and heat treatments designed to systematically vary the extent of microcracking. Austenitizing Fe-C alloys within the austenite-cementite field was found to reduce microcracking effectively partly because of a morphology change. Systematic refinement of austenitic grain size showed that microcracking could be eliminated in as-quenched plate martensite by the production of very fine grains. In specimens with fine and intermediate grain sizes, microcracks at prior austenitic grain boundaries made up a large fraction, up to one-half, of the total microcracking present.
