Abstract : An automatic fire protection system was developed, installed in a Navy manned hyperbaric chamber, and tested. All design requirements were met or exceeded. The major elements in the automatic fire protection system are four infrared detectors, 14 spray nozzles, a water supply tank, a hand line within the chamber, and two submersible pumps. Water spray is delivered to the chamber in less than 1.6 seconds after the appearance of a simulated flame. Surfaces which might support combustible material receive a water delivery rate of 2-3 gallons per minute per square foot. (Author)
