Abstract : The problem of steady-state non-local thermodynamic-equilibrium line-radiation transport is formulated for a plasma consisting of two-level ions and electrons. The treatment allows energy transfer between the translational degrees of freedom of the ions and the radiation field. Energy transfer mechanisms are discussed. The system of coupled rate equations and radiation transport equation is solved by linearizing the rate equations in electron temperature and solving the radiation transport equation in Eddington approximation. The authors present analytic results for the effective volume emission rate due to radiated energy, and they also present numerical results for the variation of electron temperature and the level populations with position in the plasma, along with some qualitative arguments supporting the theory presented.
